Women in Science and Health

The Women In Science & Health Committee was established with the following charge:

  • To enhance the advancement of women through professional development programs.
  • Establishing an effective network of women faculty.
  • Assessing the current status of women faculty in terms of academic rank, years of service and salary plus incentives.
  • Developing and implementing a faculty mentoring program for women.

As a result of the work of this group both women and male faculty are currently involved in the mentoring program. In addition, a number of women faculty have been able to attend the prestigious Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) with others from all across the county.

Merit Badge University

Recently, more than 250 Scouts participated in Merit Badge University, an annual one-day event that provides opportunities for members of Scouts BSA to earn merit badges in a variety of ways. Merit Badge University is sponsored by WVU and the Mountaineer Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Women In Science and Health Committee help Scouts earn merit badges during the annual Merit Badge University event.

To fulfill the service component of earning a merit badge, Scouts volunteered with Project MUSHROOM (Multidisciplinary UnSheltered Homeless Relief Outreach of Morgantown) to create care packages that will be delivered by the organization.

The School of Medicine-based project partnered with the Health Sciences Women in Science and Health Committee (WISH) to ensure items for the packages were available throughout the day.

Scouts were able to earn Merit Badges in a variety of ways at the annual Merit Badge University event held at West Virginia University.
