Ian Rockett

rockett.jpgDr. Ian Rockett is Professor, Associate Chair, and Director of Educational Programs in the Department of Community Medicine at West Virginia University. He holds an MPH in epidemiology from Harvard University, an MA in sociology from the University of Western Ontario, and a PhD in demography and medical sociology from Brown University. Previously he was Professor of Epidemiology and Director of the Bureau of Evaluation, Research, and Service at the University of Tennessee, and also Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Community Medicine at the University of Melbourne (Australia). He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Open Addiction Journal (Utrecht University), and has served as a judge at the national Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) competition since its inception in 2004.
Dr. Rockett has focused his research in the two interconnected areas of injury and substance use and abuse. Among his current projects are analyses of psychiatric comorbidity, racial-ethnicity, and suicide misclassification, and assessments of stress and smoking behavior in Chinese sub-populations. His past research includes statewide hospital emergency department studies of motor vehicular trauma and substance abuse treatment need, respectively, and cross-national studies of suicide data quality. The preponderance of his research has been either primary data analyses utilizing population-based surveys or secondary data analyses of national and international cause-of-death data.
