Pamela Beach - Healthier Weigh - 2002

Healthier Weigh 2002: Winning the bicycle in the "Healthier Weigh" contest means more to me than I could ever really express.

Exercise has become a very important part of my life. I have lost about 160 pounds and I am trying hard to lose another 40 to 50 more. Winning this contest makes me all the more determined to reach my goal.

WVU Hospitals has played a very important part in saving my life and restoring my health. I had gastric bypass surgery on June 5th, 2001. Bariatric surgery has been a tremendous help to me but it still takes a lot of hard work and determination. I still have to make healthy choices in my diet and I exercise daily. I am very thankful that we have The Wellness Program to aid me in my journey to good health.

Prior to my 160-pound weight loss, I was suffering from diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), asthma, and sleep apnea. I had to test my blood sugar levels about 4 times a day and I had to take 3 insulin injections per say in addition to many oral medications. I no longer have to take the insulin shots and I am off of most of my oral medication. My blood sugar levels are always normal now. I feel as though I have a new lease on life. I did not realize just how much my previous lifestyle of poor eating habits and non-exercise held me back. I did not realize how bad I felt until I started to feel good again.

I am so thankful to WVU Hospitals and The Wellness Program for helping me.
