Wellness Champion

Kelly Dorn RN - 2002

In October 1999 I had a wake-up call. I experienced and episode in which my blood pressure reached 180/120. I was dizzy and my vision blurred. I was hospitalized and started on Norvasc. My lipid profile was also poor.

My mother had been chronically ill with brittle insulin dependent diabetes and cardiac issues etc...since I was 12 years old. I realized that if I continue to treat this body like a trash compactor, I was going to be trashed. So I started a lifestyle change which involved cognitive restructuring, dietary changes and exercise. Dr. Christine Kincaid and Registered Dietician Mary Anne Yanosik were very helpful and supportive.

I continue to use a lot of positive self talk to keep me motivated. I've lost a total of 122 pounds. My blood pressure in now within normal limits and I've been off Norvasc since December 2000. My lipid profile is also within normal limits.

I have a lot more energy and higher self esteem. I workout at a gym now on a regular basis and actually enjoy exercise! It's a great stress buster!
