Using the RN Newsreader from the VAX

This document gives the basic commands for using the RN newsreader accessible from the VAX prompt. The RN newsreader is a program that gives you access to Usenet newsgroups that are subscribed to at SUNYA. For more information, see Internet From the VAX Prompt.

I. Starting RN

$ rn

II. Locating, Subscribing, and Unsubscribing to Newsgroups

News> DIR/GROUP/ALL list all newsgroups available at SUNYA
News> DIR/GROUP/ALL *LIB* list all newsgroups available with the string "lib" in name
News> DIR/GROUP list all newsgroups to which you have subscribed
News> SUB newsgroupname subscribe to a newsgroup
News> UNSUB newsgroupname unsubscribe to a newsgroup

III. Reading Articles in Newsgroups

News> GROUP newsgroupname open a subscribed-to newsgroup to read articles
News> DIR list articles in current newsgroup by number
Displays: Article ### Lines From Subject
News> ### read a message by its number
News> <ENTER> read/continue reading current message in the newsgroup
News> CURRENT go to the beginning of the current news article
News> N or NEXT go to the next article
News> B or BACK go back to the previous article
News> SAVE [filename] save current article to a file in your VAX login directory
News> FORWARD forward current message to an e-mail address
News> SET SEEN/ALL mark all available messages as read

IV. Adding Articles to Newsgroups

News> POST/EDIT post an article to the current newsgroup
News> REPLY/EDIT reply to the current article
News> REPLY/MAIL reply by mail to the originator of the article
News> CANCEL delete an article you posted to a newsgroup

V. Leaving RN

News> EXIT
