AHEC Centers

WV AHEC partners with the WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health to facilitate community-based rotations for health professions students and select students from other in-state institutions. The regional AHEC Centers work closely with students placed with preceptors providing health and dental care within the geographical area of each AHEC Center. Housing is provided for students' off-campus needs. While gaining clinical experience from local preceptors, students are also provided opportunities to participate in AHEC-led inter-professional education events and community service learning projects. Community rotations play an important role in recruitment and retention of health care providers in under served areas of West Virginia.

In addition to organizing community-based rotations for health professions students, each AHEC Center collaborates with local, regional, and state health education organizations to offer continuing education opportunities to improve skills in communities on topics such as obesity, cultural competency, geriatric skills, and substance abuse. AHEC's also collaborate with schools and community partners to promote wellness and fitness. K-12 pipeline projects, such as Moving Onward and Upward, and Health Professions Club, enhance health career awareness activities for high school students, and provide shadowing opportunities.
