About AWIS West Virginia Chapter

Mission

Dedicated to achieving equity and full participation for women in science, technology, and engineering in West Virginia.

The goal of AWIS is to achieve equity and full participation of women in science, technology, and engineering. The strength of AWIS depends upon our members, whether you are independent or belong to a chapter. Together we can make the road smoother for our daughters and other young women who seek careers in science. Although the climate for women has been improving, women in science and technology-based jobs, whether in academia or industry, are paid about 70% of what their male colleagues are paid; are twice as likely to be on non-tenure track positions; and seldom rise to high level leadership and policy-making levels. In short, both the educational and work experience of women need improvement.
What are the benefits that membership in AWIS provides? We are a network, a resource, and a voice. Our networks are local, national, and international, providing colloquy and advice for research, careers, education, and nominations. Our resources include not only our contacts, but also published materials, our web site, funding for student projects, and a wealth of experience. Our voice is heard clearly in Washington, across the country, and abroad, as we testify and participate in national discussions on capacity building in science. We are your eyes, ears, and voice on national issues of critical importance to women in science and technology, including science policy, women’s health, and career advancement. The national office in Washington, D.C., is the key to coordinating these activities, while the chapters focus on implementing locally important projects.
