Influence the future of young women by participating in WV EYH Conferences!
"Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics" (EYH) conferences are part of a nationally recognized program designed to expose young women to exciting careers in science and math. The Math/Science Network began holding these conferences in 1976, and to date, they are held annually in over 120 locations nationwide.
Successful EYH conferences accomplish the following goals:
- Stress the importance of taking math and science courses essential for employable careers
- Encourage young women to persist in math and science courses in secondary school
- Engage young women in hands-on workshops with professional women in the fields of math and science
- Provide guidance in the area of career opportunities for women in math and science and act as role models for these occupations
- Convey
job satisfaction and economic stability for professional women in math
and science related fields
A typical
conference . . .
The EYH program
consists of a one-day conference for middle school girls. The girls who
participate attend workshops in small groups designed to introduce them
to the work of professional women with careers in engineering, science
and math. In other workshops, role models share personal experiences on
the job, necessary education, and descriptions of career options. Parents
and teachers are encouraged to attend seminars on college recruiting and
financial aid.
Girls, parents, and teachers may attend any one of the following workshops:
- Hands-on: Girls participate in math and science activities led by professionals.
- Career: Workshop leaders discuss their personal experiences.
- Guidance: Councilors provide college information.
