We are proud of the family-like atmosphere we have created over the decades. We have a friendly atmosphere where faculty, residents, and staff share in developing formal and social events. This atmosphere is the heartbeat of our department, a department which is known for stability and collegiality. As we know firsthand, nurturing environments lead to rewarding and excellent education, research, and clinical care.
We offer a broad educational experience with a balance of biological psychiatry and psychodynamic principles in pursuit of clinical excellence, community service, and research. Our department is animated with rapidly developing research programs. The Health Behavior Research Center and Addictions & Psychiatric Medicine Research merged in July of 2005 to form a comprehensive research facility, the Health Research Center. All residents are asked to join faculty members in research projects in which they share passion and curiosity.
In addition to our many research programs, we are eagerly watching the construction of the new building for the Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute at WVU. The Insititute focuses on research into Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and depression. Our faculty, residents, and students have access to the Institute's interdisciplinary memory disorder division and access to its development of new diagnostic and brain science technologies. We are excited about the Insititute's translational-science goal of moving discoveries from the labs to patients.
The resident's primary clinical training takes place at Chestnut Ridge Center, a division of West Virginia University Hospitals. Chestnut Ridge Hospital opened in 1987 on the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center campus. Our talented faculty is a balanced blend of professors who have been invested in our department for over two decades and young junior faculty who bring an abundance of energy, diversity, and fresh ideas.
Our residents learn to practice within the general framework of the primary care medical model. We prepare residents for private practice, public sector work, or academic careers. In addition to the general psychiatry program, we offer combined training programs in internal medicine, neurology, and family medicine. We also offer fellowships in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and in Forensic Psychiatry.
