Ben Lafferty, MD, Child Fellow 2007-2009

Program Description

The Child and Adolescent fellowship program at West Virginia University is designed to offer a well balanced, well- rounded experience in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of psychopathology in children and adolescents through exposure to normal and abnormal children and their families. Emphasis is placed on developing core competencies in Medical Knowledge, Patient Care, Practice-Based Learning, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Systems-Based Practice and Professionalism. This two-year program prepares fellows for national boards.

The primary training site, Chestnut Ridge Center, is the psychiatric center for West Virginia University Hospitals (WVUH), located on the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center campus. The hospital is a regional referral center providing fellows with the quantity and diversity of patient experience necessary for training. Other training sites include Children's Hospital at Ruby Memorial Hospital and Child Care Center, all part of WVUH. A formal curriculum is offered including supervision and rotations through inpatient, outpatient and day treatment services, consultation to courts, schools and community agencies. Fellows develop increasing competence in teaching administrative and clinical skills. Fellows will learn to function as a part of a multidisciplinary team working toward the BEST INTEREST OF THE CHILD.

The multidisciplinary faculty includes adult and child psychiatrists, child psychologists, child social workers and experiential therapist. Fellows are supervised by Board Certified Child psychiatrists.
