The program offers a general psychology internship in a university medical center setting, and emphasizes a scientist-practitioner, cognitive-behavioral approach. The internship supervisors maintain a close tutorial and supportive relationship with the interns; at the same time, we encourage interns to function more independently as they make the transition from graduate student to professional psychologist.

The Clinical Psychology Internship at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University has been accredited  by the American Psychological Association since 1972, and in 2010, received a seven year accreditation. The WVU School of Medicine Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry, located at Chestnut Ridge Center, sponsors this yearlong predoctoral internship. The program emphasizes strong supervision and training in assessment and intervention from a cognitive-behavioral perspective. Interns gain clinical experience with patients representing a broad range of presenting problems in both inpatient and outpatient treatment settings. A variety of didactic and research opportunities are also provided.

We offer a general clinical psychology internship program within which interns can focus their experience in one of two areas: adult psychology or neuropsychology. The experiences offered emphasize comprehensive training, but also allow flexibility for more in-depth experiences in areas that are of particular interest to the trainee. Additional minor rotation experiences are required and are designed to complement the major rotations so as to ensure a well-rounded generalist training experience. Interns will not complete minor experiences that duplicate experiences in their major area.

The internship begins July 1, 2012. Orientation occurs one-two weeks prior to the start date, typically in the last two weeks of June. Interns are expected to attend and will be compensated for this activity.

Training Goal

The overarching goal of the internship is to prepare our graduates for the independent practice of professional psychology in a variety of settings, including academic medical centers, university psychology departments, and primary clinical settings that offer inpatient and/or outpatient services. Preparation for independent practice includes integration of science into practice, understanding of and sensitivity to cultural and individual diversity, adherence to ethical standards, provision of supervision and teaching, and professional identity as a psychologist.
