Research Interests:
My current research interests are focused on the development of tissue classification techniques of atherosclerosis, 3D elastography imaging of cancer tissues, 3D ultrasound imaging of gingivitis and periodontitis in humans, and ultrasonic nondestructive material characterization.
Several Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) techniques have been proposed recently to non-invasively characterize human tissues. In cardiovascular research, wall elasticity is of high clinical interest because of its correlation with different cardiovascular diseases. In this research, we are trying to measure the change of normal and shear stresses directly from different cardiovascular walls over the time. Sonographic measurements of flow-medicated dilation (FMD) can be used to obtain the strain rate imaging which can be used to track wall changes over the time.
An ongoing clinical study in our Lab is focused on in vivo imaging of both malignant and benign tissues of breast cancer. Hybrid imaging of both ultrasound strain imaging (elastography) and mammography is clinically performed at the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.
Another ongoing clinical study is focused on virtual histology imaging of gingivitis with collaboration with the School of Dentistry. Both in vitro and in vivo studies have been performed to elucidate how our ultrasound imaging compares with histology results.
