Neurology

Goal & Educational Purpose To allow residents to gain skills necessary to treat and diagnose neurologic problems that will be seen by a general internist and to act as a consultant in neurology if the internist practices in a community without a neurologist; to perform a complete neurologist examination and history.
Objectives Gain knowledge of the diagnosis and management of the following processes:
  • Cerebrovascular diseases – embolic, hemorrhagic and thermotic CVA; subdural hematoma, subarachnoid bleeding, transient ischemic attacks, indicated studies.
  • Headaches – benign vs structural
  • Dementing illness – primary vs secondary, epidemiology, psychosocial support, HIV
  • Infectious problems – meningitis, encephalitis, abscesses, chiral (esp. H. simplex, CMV) fungal, parasitic, HIV, lumbar puncture, contiguous infections, cavernous sinus thrombosis
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Cerebellar disease
  • Movement disorders – Parkinsonism, Shy-Drager, etc.
  • Systemic disease affecting CNS-autoimmune, HIV, neoplastic, toxic metabolic, hepatic, renal
  • Delirium – differentiation of structural, infectious, toxic-metabolic drug
  • Age related changes in CNS function
  • Common neurologic problems syncope, dizziness, vertigo, neck pain vertigo, numbness, carpal tunnel, benign positional vertigo, Bell’s palsy, Guillain-Barré
  • Demyelinating diseases
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Educational Content
  • One month rotation with neurologist as R-2 or R-3
  • Evaluation of neurologic cases at General Division when on Medical Service
  • Consultant to neurosurgeon and rehabilitation unit
  • Attend neurology clinic
  • Perform lumbar punctures
  • Attend neurology conference and neuroradiology conference when on neurology rotation and when part of core curriculum conferences

  • Resident evaluation of attending and rotation
  • Faculty observation on conferences
  • ITE results on neurology section
  • ABIM certifying results on neurology section
  • Input from resident meetings
