Surgery
The Pediatrics Department of the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University Charleston Division is ready to care for the health needs of children in southern West Virginia by offering Pediatric Surgery services to pediatricians, family practitioners, and to other primary care physicians. Dr. A. Margarita Torres, Board Certified, Pediatric Surgeon, can assist in the care of children from birth to 18 years of age for diagnoses and treatment of various surgical conditions.
- Congenital anomalies of lungs and GI tract
- Inguinal/Umbilical hernia’s
- Appendicitis
- Pyloric stenosis
- Bumps and Lumps
- Surgical removal of pediatric thoracic and abdominal tumors
The WVUPC (West Virginia University Physicians of Charleston) Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4:30 for referral appointments. Dr. A. Margarita Torres sees referrals in clinic 2 days a week, serves as Attending, Consultant and as an academic advisor to residents.
Dr. Torres’s specialty involves an understanding of diagnosis, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management of surgical problems in children. Dr. Torres operates on children whose development ranges from the newborn stage through the teenage years. Some medical conditions in newborns are not compatible with a good quality of life unless the problems are corrected surgically. Dr. Torres works closely with all of the specialists involved in a child’s medical care to determine whether surgery is the best option for the child. (Pediatrician, Family Physician, Neonatologist) Dr. Torres utilizes her expertise in providing surgical care for all problems or conditions affecting children that require surgical intervention. Some of the areas of particular expertise:
- Knowledge in the surgical repair of birth defects, some of which may be life threatening to premature and full-term infants.
- Critical care situations involving traumatic injuries sustained by children that may or may not require surgical intervention.
- Diagnosis and surgical care of children with malignant tumors as well as those with benign growths.
