9 September 2008:

Congratulations to the following graduate students for completion of all requirements for their Ph.D.

Amy Sindler has accepted a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Doug Seals at the University of Colorado at Boulder in Boulder, CO

Lori Kang has accepted a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Matthew Boegehold at WVU

Amanda LeBlanc has accepted a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Timothy Nurkiewicz at WVU

Doveina Ponnoth has accepted a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Jeffrey Fedan at the National Institutes of Health

4 September 2008:

Congratulations to Dr. John Hollander who received an NIH Director’s New Pathfinder Award. This large, five-year grant was recently created to support a small number of new investigators "of exceptional creativity who propose bold and highly innovative new research approaches that have the potential to produce a major impact on broad, important problems".

3 September 2008:

Dr. Timothy Nurkiewicz was recently interviewed by WBOY television for a health report regarding air quality and personal exposure.

Congratulations to Erinne Dabkowski who recently was awarded a Predoctoral Fellowship Award from the American Heart Association entitiled "Influence of a Diabetic Phenotype on Specific Mitochondrial Subpopulations in the Heart".

Congratulations to Dr. John Hollander who recently was awarded a Grant in Aid from the American Heart Association entitiled "Mitochondrial Subpopulation Response to Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury: Influence of mPHGPx Overexpression".

1 July 2008:

We are please to announce that Anoop Shankar, MD, PhD has joined the Center. Dr. Shankar is an Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine.

His current research interests are:

  1. Cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney disease
  1. Role of inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, microvascular disease in the development of CVD, Diabetes Mellitus

 

16 June 2008:

Dr. Timothy Nurkiewicz has been invited to be a speaker at the Gordon Research Conference on "Air Pollution, Genetics and Cardiovascular Disease" being held in Lewiston, Maine on July 27-August 1, 2008 .

29 February 2008:

Dr. Jefferson Frisbee has been invited to be the keynote speaker at the 25th Conference of the European Society for Microcirculation Integrating Vascular Biology and Medicine being held in Budapest, Hungary on August 26-29, 2008 .

20 August 2007:

Dr. Timothy Nurkiewicz has been recognized as an "Outsanding New Environmental Scientist" by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Dr. Nurkiewicz was awarded over $2 million in RO1 funding through 2012. Dr. Nurkiewicz's research will characterize the microvascular consequences of pulmonary exposure to diesel exhaust particles and nanoparticles.

5 June 2007:

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Robert Brock from the University of Arkansas will be joining our Center as of August 1, 2007.

22 May 2007:

WV-IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (WV-INBRE): Casey McCroskey, a junior from Alderson- Broaddus College, has been selected as one of six awardees of the David S. Bruce Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research presented at the recent meeting of the American Physiology Society held in Washington, DC. McCroskey is first author on a poster from her summer research project with Dr. Judy Muller-Delp. Casey will return to the WV-INBRE Summer Program this year to again work with Dr. Delp.

Also returning are: Katie MacGregor (Davis & Elkins College), mentor: Jefferson Frisbee and Joshua Briscoe (West Virginia Wesleyan College), mentor: Timothy Nurkiewicz.

21 May 2007:

An ongoing collaborative study between Drs. Timothy Nurkiewicz and Judy Muller-Delp was highlighted at the annual Experimental Biology Meeting in Washington, D.C. The new study reported that a component of diesel exhaust significantly impairs the ability of resistance arteries to dilate, and that pre-menopausal females possess a vasoprotective factor that shields them from such effects. 11 May 2007:

The Julie Betschart Symposium was recently held at EuroSuites Hotel. Poster and oral presentations were presented by nine students in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. Congratulations to Mei Xu, who took first place, and Yucel Akgul, who took second.

26 April 2007:

Congratulations to Amanda Jo LeBlanc for third place honors at the recent E.J. Van Liere Memorial Research Convocation. Amanda presented on how aging and estrogen status affect coronary blood flow control. Amanda is a graduate student in Dr. Judy Delp's laboratory.
