Graduate Certificate in Gerontology

The Graduate Certificate in Gerontology is pursued concurrently with a graduate
program. A designated amount of hours can be taken without enrollment in a
graduate program.
The Certificate affords students an
opportunity to explore the basic biological, psychological, and sociological
processes of aging, their effects on the needs experiences by older people,
and the impact of social policies related to human aging.
An understanding of the unique problems
and needs of older adults in Appalachia and other rural areas is emphasized.
The Graduate Certificate Program requires
15 graduate credits as detailed below:
- GERO 691/PSYC 524/BIOL 738/PUBH 691 (required) Fundamentals
of Gerontology - 3 credit hours
- GERO 512/PUBH 691/SOWK 693 (recommended) Public
Policy of Aging - 3 credit hours
- GERO 695 (required) Independent Study
Research - 3 credit hours (must obtain instructor's permission)
- GERO 410/681 Rural Elderly - 3 credit hours
- Additional Elective Courses (from approved
gerontology-based pool)- 3 credit hours
Certificate Requirements:
The Graduate Certificate in Gerontology requires the completion of 15 graduate credits as detailed. A 3.0 grade-point average must be maintained in all Certificate coursework.;
- Fundamentals of Gerontology (Biology 375,
Psychology 375 or
Sociology/Anthropology
375) 3 credit hours
- Elective courses (From approved pool) 9 credit hours
- Gerontology 391 (Research Project) 3 credit hours
15 credit hours
