Undergraduate Certificate in Gerontology

The Undergraduate Certificate in Gerontology is pursued concurrently with any undergraduate major. The Certificate affords students an opportunity to explore the basic biological, psychological, and sociological processes of aging, their effects on the needs experienced by older people, and the impact of social policies related to human aging. Additionally, through a required field experience, students develop basic skills for effective practice with older adults. An understanding of the unique problems and needs of older adults in Appalachia and other rural areas is emphasized.
Certificate Requirements:
The Undergraduate certificate requires 18 credits of coursework and field
experience as detailed:
- GERO 212 (required)
Introduction to Gerontology - 3 credit hours
- GERO 312 (required) Issues in Gerontology - 3 credit hours
- GERO 491 (required) Professional Gerontology Field Experience - 3 credit hours
- GERO 410 (recommended) The Rural Elderly - 3 credit hours
- GERO 412 (recommended) Public Policy of
Aging - 3 credit hours
- GERO 628/PUBH 628 (recommended) Aging, Women, & Multicultural Perspectives - 3 credit hours
- GERO 495 (recommended) Independent Study - 3 credit hours (must have advisor approval)
- Additional Elective Courses (from
approved gerontology-based pool) - 9 credit hours
A 3.0 grade point average must be
maintained in all Certificate course work.
Fieldwork credits for the Undergraduate
program are earned in 491 (Professional Gerontology Field Experience) or in
practicum courses in departments appropriate to the student's major.
Gerontology professors assist in identifying sites for fieldwork experience
with older persons and/or a relevant agency and in the supervision of the
student's work.
Students who satisfactory complete the
requirements of the program will receive a Certificate of Gerontology at the
time they receive their Bachelor's degree, and the award will be noted on each
recipient's University transcript.
Upon satisfactory completion of the
requirements of the program, a Certificate in Gerontology will be awarded by
the Center on Aging.
