Abstract:

This contribution is intended to consider the specific characteristics of the demographic transition in rural populations, the similarities, differences and interrelations with its evolution in urban areas with regard to mortality and fertility. In this context, special consideration is given to the declining health status, which is likely to be the paramount and most influential dimension in old age. In turn, this factor is heavily correlated to residential arrangements as a proxy for intergenerational and kin relations measured in terms of emotional and material support between children and their elderly parents.
