Abstract:
Urbanization arguably is one of the most significant population trends of the last 50 years. While the growth of cities and related socioeconomic changes have been well-studied, less attention has been devoted to the impact of urbanization on rural areas and peoples, especially older people. National projections of older populations in rural areas often are lacking, which precludes effective program development. Cross-national studies of rural aging processes are few, and social scientists still know relatively little about topics such as patterns of circular and/or family migration, return and retirement migration, intergenerational remittances across geographical areas, and the meaning of migration in different cultures. This symposium will explore these areas by focusing first on what can be broadly understood from extant international demographic and survey data, and second on the situation of older persons in three very different parts of the world: Russia, China, and Kenya.
