Recommendations & Ensure Their Implications

Education, Participation and Rights
- Develop mechanisms for further study of the following issues of rural aging:
- changing migrational patterns
- intergenerational relationships
- role of older people
- the impact of technology
- livelihood and employment
- care strategies.
These outcomes will feed into policy-making processes to ensure that policy and program development for older people in rural and remote areas is rights-based, gender-sensitive and equitable. They should also respond to the expressed needs of the older people and have a positive impact on their lives.
- Promote policy development at all levels of government in areas already identified as priority:
Health
- Primary health care in the context of accessibility and affordability
- Ensure equitable access to health, and to social and income security
Education
- Access to education/literacy for people of all ages in rural areas
Research
- Identify funding sources & organizations committed to rural aging research
- Identify & utilize models of rural aging research
- Promote retrieval of data important for rural aging
Implications for Programs
Disseminate examples of Best Practice with older people in rural areas. Promote local innovation & development of local resources.
