There are several excellent sources for data on rural aging, although few are actually designated as rural aging sources. That is, they are most typically part of ongoing data collection efforts or of special studies on aging that have large rural components. Finding and using data on rural aging are not only two different processes, but also they face somewhat different obstacles and the solutions are likewise different. This workshop will address both of these issues.

Sources of census type data include the national census bureau in most countries and the United Nations also houses these data to publish the UN Demographic Yearbook. The US Census Bureau also maintains an international database, as do several university population laboratories. Many countries also conduct special surveys and agricultural censuses that profile farm operators (in most cases rural) based on age, sex, residence, status, farm work, non-farm work, injuries and agricultural operations. Selections of the latter data are sent to FAO and are distributed by them. Many jurisdictions and organizations also have administrative data that may be used by researchers to address additional questions about rural health and rural aging.
