Geriatric Dentistry in the New Millennium: What Does the Future Hold?

Convener: Douglas Berkey, Denver, Colorado, USA

With the dawning of the 21st century, dental health care professionals are seeing a substantial increase of older adults in their practices. Many of these patients require more expertise in assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, clinical provision of care, and utilization of appropriate delivery systems. This workshop will provide in-depth information on a number of key issues including: 1) the interface between oral and systemic health; 2) the role of nutrition and oral function in disease and health; 3) how to prevent substantial oral health problems in the elderly; 4) essential concepts associated with restorative techniques and biomaterials; 5) creative removable prosthodontic strategies in treating at-risk elderly; and 6) how to utilize a viable portable dental delivery system to provide dental care to isolated elderly patient populations.
