the boom days of coal

An intergenerational oral history project documenting life in the coal camps

of the Upper Kanawha Valley, West Virginia

The Boom Days of Coal Oral History Project has four goals:

1. To preserve the rich heritage of the Upper Kanawha Valley in Southeastern Kanawha County

2. To connect high school youth to their rural roots, thereby building social capital between the generations and instilling a sense of pride in West Virginia heritage

3. To provide health professions students the opportunity to increase their cultural competence with the rural Appalachian aging population

4. To provide health professions students positive experiences with healthy elders, thereby increasing the likelihood that they will enter careers in aging
