Former Project Goals

The Mountain State Geriatric Education Center brought together health care educators and professionals, representatives of managed care organizations, policy makers, and service providers, to develop a geriatric education infrastructure that addresses the educational and training requirements of the evolving managed health care delivery system. The network utilized a variety of communications media for the purpose of geriatrics education information dissemination and to strengthen professional collaborative relations among the growing community of scholars.

The MSGEC has three primary goals:

  1. Network Development

Established a geriatrics education network infrastructure to improve geriatric knowledge of health care professionals in West Virginia.

Distributed Newsletters

Developed a Speakers Bureau

Provided opportunities for sharing geriatric knowledge and skills

 

  1. Faculty Development

Developed and implemented a structured program of geriatric education to health professions educators and the clinical faculty at West Virginia rural health training sites. 

Developed interdisciplinary rural geriatric rotations

Developed geriatric clinical rotations

Enhanced geriatric education for health science students

Provided geriatric education at professional development conferences

Sponsored and co-sponsored educational events

Collaborated with other Geriatric Education Centers

Provided distance learning opportunities

Provided geriatric continuing education to West Virginia health care professionals and paraprofessionals. 

Provided geriatric continuing education programs

Provided distance learning opportunities for continuing education

With the WVU School of Dentistry, provided geriatric education for long term care facilities

Established speakers bureau and geriatric education clearinghouse
