A.G.E.S. is an organization that brings about an interactive collaboration between students and senior citizens in the West Virginia University community. Established in 1994, A.G.E.S. boasts an involvement of hundreds of WVU students and area senior citizens. Sponsored by three WVU student organizations (Student Administration, the Honors Program and the Center on Aging) A.G.E.S. members interact with each other in a mutually supportive environment.

‘Intergenerate’ program changes name to ‘A.G.E.S. at WVU’
(Morgantown, W.Va., Sept. 18, 2003) - For the past nine years, West Virginia University students and senior citizens have enjoyed getting together once a month during the academic year for activities and service projects ranging from learning how to belly dance to candy making to planting butterfly gardens for the community.  Until now, the organization was known as ‘Intergenerate,’ but this year they have decided to change their name to ‘A.G.E.S. at WVU,’ short for Across Generations Experiences Shared at West Virginia University.

“We felt a new name might be more descriptive.” said Maria Durbin, the Assistant Director for Public Affairs and Center Coordinator at the WVU Center on Aging.  “Our new name will help us reach out to individuals that may not have been familiar with Intergenerate and convey a greater sense of community.”

A.G.E.S. is coordinated by the WVU Center on Aging and fosters collaborations between students and senior citizens in the university community.  Established in 1994, as Intergenerate, the program has encouraged the involvement of hundreds of WVU students and local seniors.

“I'm inspired by some of the men and women that I've met. Even at their ages they're very optimistic.” said Erika Stratman, A.G.E.S. president. “Optimistic about the youth of today rather than having a negative view about the way the world has changed during their lifetimes. They're very optimistic and I've carried that away from my experiences.”

This Sunday, Sept. 21, A.G.E.S. will be hosting a Social and Nature Walk at the Star City Pavilion on the Rail Trail from 2-4 p.m.  Forester Mark Burke will lead the nature walk.

In October, the group will meet at Heritage Village on the 19th for an Oktoberfest-themed activity.
