Support WVU Children’s Hospital

Fundraising Priorities for WVU Children’s Hospital

Psychosocial Support Services Team

The Psychosocial Support Services Team is committed to serving patients and families of WVU Children’s Hospital as a center of treatment and education through emotional and behavioral health services for infants, children, teens and their families as well as to provide support services to alleviate stress associated with chronic medical conditions. This team also provides support to the hospital staff. Gift dollars help fund the operation of the Psychosocial Support Services Team.

Child Life Program

The Child Life program helps children and families cope with the stresses of hospitalization. They provide support, education, recreation and assistance to the children and their families before and during their stay in the hospital. The goal of the Child Life Program is to help the children maintain their normal living patterns while also helping them cope with new and stressful circumstances. A total of $75,000 is needed to operate the Child Life Program each year.

Newborn and Pediatric Critical Care Services

WVU Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in West Virginia that offers the entire spectrum of services needed to care for critically ill newborn and pediatric patients. In order to continually respond to the critical needs of our children we must enhance existing critical care services for pre-term through adolescent patients. In addition, expanding medical sub-specialties available and supporting the services through involvement in community-based educational and prevention programs will help meet our mission as a full service children’s hospital. Numerous components of this support are contingent on gift funding ranging from $25,000 to $1,000,000. These projects can be fulfilled through multi-year pledges.

Maternal & Infant Service

The Maternal Infant Care Center at WVU Children’s Hospital offers state of the art care to women before, during, and after delivery. The unit offers a family-friendly environment with rooms large enough to accommodate family members as well as space to allow the neonatal team to respond to infant needs and for the obstetrical team to stabilize mom if necessary. Each room is equipped with stateof- the-art lights, suction and monitoring equipment for mom as well as another set for baby. While the unit easily accommodates moms during a typical 48 hour stay, it is also designed for mothers who may spend months in the hospital awaiting the arrival of their new baby. An average of 1,600 babies are born in MICC each year with 72% of those being high risk. Numerous opportunities to enhance this service for expectant mothers from across the region are contingent on gift funding. Specific projects and pricing can be designed with the donor’s wishes including multi-year pledge fulfillment plans.

Pediatric Patient Care Enhancement

Every year over 7,000 children are patients within the Pediatric Care Center at WVU Children’s Hospital. In addition to the medical subspecialties required to provide ultimate care for these children, some facility enhancements are required to maximize the utilization of caregivers and create an updated environment for the children. Specific funding is needed to transform patient rooms into isolation rooms, providing them with the special environment many of our patients require. Enhancement throughout the Pediatric Care Center will range from $50,000 to $250,000. Multi-year options for pledges are available to help us realize this goal.
