Priorities

Erma Byrd Health Professions Education Center
Dedicated April 29, 2006, the new Erma Byrd Health Professions Education Center in Martinsburg provides students a place to learn and study, including a computer lab, library, auditorium and classrooms. Space is also provided for administrative and faculty offices and the Health Sciences Technology Academy program. The second floor is unfinished shell space. Funds are needed to furnish and complete the 2nd floor construction, which will include administrative offices, a simulation teaching laboratory, and conference rooms.

Eastern Division HSC Learning Center
Funds will provide a regional state-of-the-art health sciences library to support the educational initiatives and programs for the hospitals and health care centers in the eastern region. Funds will provide support for furnishings, such as a wireless network, a collection of current medical and electronic resources, exams and board preparation materials for student and faculty use.

Clinical Simulation Lab
Simulation training has become an integral part of medical education at the best schools in the country. With private support, the Eastern Division plans to build its own comprehensive clinical teaching laboratory. This laboratory will include simulator devices to help health professions students improve their analytical, diagnostic, and intervention skills. Simulator devices help health care professionals and students understand and learn how to operate complex instruments confidently and safely to perform complicated procedures. The laboratory will be located on the second floor of the new Erma Byrd Health Professions Education Center.

Program Development
The Eastern Division if focused on expanding and developing educational and clinical programs in pharmacy, dentistry and geriatrics. With funds, the programs can focus on the most recent knowledge, techniques and procedures for promoting health. This would include instruction in the administration of medication and treatments, assisting a provider during treatments and examinations, referring patients to other health care specialists, and planning education for health maintenance.

Faculty Development
In order to provide top quality health profession education and residency training programs, support is needed for the recruitment of outstanding faculty members. Endowed positions and enhanced faculty salary packages would provide support for retention and recruitment. The Eastern Division seeks Professorships in Geriatrics, Pharmacy, and Dentistry.

Student Support
Through endowed pharmacy, medical and dental scholarships, the Eastern Division will be able to attract bright and talented students who will enrich us with their diversity and excel in their field. Increased funding for scholarships is crucial to support deserving students.
