Grant Protocol for Faculty and Staff

To Faculty and Staff:

The following concerns the protocol for private foundation philanthropic grant proposals as approved by Dr. Butcher and Dr. Brick. The WVU Health Sciences Center Development Office works collaboratively with Alan Martin and the Office of Sponsored Programs to route proposals appropriately to either the WVU Foundation or the WVU Research Corporationa and Office of Sponsored Programs, respectively. If you're not sure which is the appropriate route for your proposal, contact Valerie Lemasters at OSP or the HSC Development Office. The only restrictions that the WVU Foundation has on submitting or accepting grant proposals are as follows:

The WVU Foundation cannot accept funds for
— “physically invasive”
— human subject research
— research with animal subjects
— research with biohazzards
— government funds &
— contractual projects with direct business benefit to the donor.

Many private foundations do not award indirect costs. For those that do, the indirect cost line item in WVU Foundation grants now are routed back to the WVU Research Corporation for appropriate distribution according to the Research Corporation's policies. No indirect costs remain with the WVU Foundation.

All faculty and staff should use the routing form for private foundation proposals being routed through the WVU Foundation. This form is utilized to ensure a strategic approach to private funding requests so that they are approved at the Department Chair, Dean, and VP for HSC level. In addition, there is a development staff review of the proposal. This routing form is used university-wide.

Please contact the Development Office (304)293-3980 with any questions regarding this protocol.
