Dr. Sarwari Receives National Teaching Award
The American College of Physicians has awarded West Virginia University faculty member Arif Sarwari, M.D., the Herbert S. Waxman Outstanding Medical Student Educator Award, granted May 15 in Washington D.C. Sarwari, an infectious diseases specialist, is the fourth recipient of the Herbert S. Waxman Award, devoted to doctors who are dedicated to teaching. Dr. Sarwari has been at WVU since 2001 and has won many awards for his outstanding teaching including the School of Medicine Distinguished Teacher Award in 2008.

E. Jane Martin Named Interim Provost
E. Jane Martin, former dean of the WVU School of Nursing, will take over as Interim Provost in July. She plans to maintain the integrity of degrees and move the University's academic mission forward. Martin was dean at the School of Nursing for 15 years and is currently a senior advisor and the vice president of health sciences.

WVU School of Pharmacy Students Receive National and Regional Honors
West Virginia University School of Pharmacy students received four awards during the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) convention in San Diego: a regional award for educating the community about diabetes through the 2007 Operation Diabetes Campaign, a regional award for the 2007 Operation Immunization Campaign where students advocated that pharmacists be allowed to administer vaccines, and two national awards for local chapter work for overall acheivement in activities.

Dr. Charlton Named Chair of Ophthalmology
Judie Charlton, MD, has been named chair of the WVU Department of Opthalmology. She will lead the physicians, scientists, and other faculty who care for patients, conduct reserach and educate future physicians at the WVU Eye Institute. Dr. Charlton has served on the WVU faculty since 1990.

James Brick, MD, Named Interim Dean of School of Medicine
Dr. Brick, E.B. Flink Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine, will take on yet another role as Dean of the School of Medicine. He leads an outstanding faculty, including physicians of international renown.

Clinical Simulation
On November 30, 2007, WVU physicians and nurses showcased the latest in simulation technology by "creating" emergencies to demonstrate how cutting-edge technology helps in the classroom.
