Donors to WVU Health Sciences have an opportunity to double their gift with state matching funds. On March 8, 2008, the West Virginia Legislature passed Senate Bill 287 to create the “Bucks for Brains” West Virginia Research trust fund, which will match state dollars with private donations to encourage university research and leverage private giving.
The State of West Virginia created the WV Research Trust Fund, known also as “Bucks for Brains,” with an initial appropriation of $50 million to leverage public and private investments that will help transform West Virginia’s economy. West Virginia University will be able to tap into this fund to double* private gifts that support research areas linked to economic development, health care, and job growth.
*up to $35 million
West Virginia ranks 50th in the U.S. in the creation and retention of high value-added, high-wage jobs. In order to participate in the new economy and create lasting opportunities for job growth, West Virginia must strengthen research programs and stop the “brain drain” of talented citizens who leave the state to seek employment.
Today every department at the WVU School of Medicine is involved in basic science and clinical research. At WVU, medical research focuses on the treatment and prevention of diseases which are prevalent in West Virginia such as childhood leukemia, breast cancer, obesity, diabetes, depression, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, epilepsy, heart disease and stroke. Biomedical research at WVU helps make us healthier and improves West Virginia’s economy so more people will have the opportunity to live happy, productive lives.
Endowment Income may be used 1) to pay the salaries of newly endowed chairs, professorship positions, research scientists and research staff, including, but not limited to, research technicians and support personnel and to fund affiliated graduate or undergraduate student research fellowships and 2) to purchase basic infrastructure directly related to an area of research, including, but not limited to, laboratory and scientific equipment and other critical equipment and materials.
An endowed fund will be created when an Agreement is signed and the $50,000 minimum amount needed from one or more donors is paid in full before March 8, 2013. All qualified private gifts receive a state match, including gifts which were previously matched by corporate matching gift programs.
