About the WVU School of Nursing

Since 1960, the School of Nursing at WVU has served as the premier center for nursing education in West Virginia. The impact of our educational programs on the provision of health care services is significant. Today, over 900 students are enrolled in nursing programs at WVU.

Programs are offered on six campuses to West Virginia residents, as well as students from other states. These programs include multiple options at the BSN and MSN levels and the state's only programs of doctoral study in nursing. We offer the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in nursing, which prepares nurse scholars/educators for roles in teaching, research and service. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) educates clinicians at the highest level of nursing practice.

Nursing students participate in learning experiences that guide them to become top-notch professionals and highly skilled clinicians. Our curriculum integrates clinical and basic sciences and is updated to keep pace with the ongoing changes in healthcare. School of Nursing graduates greatly influence healthcare delivery throughout the nation by practicing in a variety of clinical and administrative roles as well as serving in faculty positions in higher education.

Faculty members have special expertise in rural health and distance education and conduct research on topics ranging from risky behaviors to patient care outcomes. A unique partnership exists between the School of Nursing and West Virginia University Hospitals, which enables nursing faculty to work in tandem with nurse clinicians.

The West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnership (RHEP) connects WVU faculty and students to rural communities in the state; nursing students work in clinical settings along with pharmacy, dental and medical students to deliver quality healthcare services. WVU rural health programs have gained national recognition and serve as a model for schools nationwide.

Due to an aging population in the United States, healthcare today more than ever requires nurses who are able to practice with more independence and have a broad competence as providers and coordinators of care. Through responsiveness to evolving healthcare needs, emerging technological advancements, and national and state changes in healthcare delivery, the School of Nursing fulfills its mission of serving the people of West Virginia and larger society through education, research and service.
