The West Virginia University Hospitals
Dietetic Internship Program began in 1983. The program is administered by the
Department of Nutrition Services of WVU Hospitals, which is the teaching
hospital of WVU that works in conjunction with the Robert C. Byrd Health
Sciences Center Medical School.
The program, which has an emphasis in Medical Nutrition Therapy,
provides dietetic interns with over 1400 hours of supervised practice
experience and training in clinical (~50% of rotations), administrative (~15%
of rotations) and community dietetics (~35% of rotations). We give interns
both clinical and administrative on-the-job training at WVU Hospitals and at
other affiliated locations.
The internship provides the resources necessary for education and training to
qualify you for responsibilities as an "entry level" generalist
dietitian with added emphasis in Medical Nutrition Therapy and qualifies you
to sit for the national registration examination.
There is also opportunity for additional specialization in a variety of
clinical areas depending upon your particular interests.

The WVU Hospital Complex is
composed of a 10-story acute care facility and an adjacent facility with a
total capacity of 522 beds. Specialty areas include neurology, cardiology, nephrology,
dialysis, skilled nursing, oncology, critical care, and the blood and marrow
transplant unit.
Interns also gain experience in pediatrics at WVU Children's Hospital and work with patients in the Jon
Michael Moore Trauma Center, the only level 1 trauma center for adults and
pediatrics in the state.
In 2006, WVU Hospitals opened the Northeast tower that houses additional ICU
beds, a new skilled nursing unit, a new cardiac step-down unit, WVU
Children's hospital pediatric intensive care unit and additional adult step
down beds and bariatric suites.
The hospital serves our employees and the community by offering an onsite
wellness program and hosts the Dr. Dean Ornish Program
for reversing heart disease.
The WVUH Dietetic Internship Program
has 8 slots. The program, which is 41 weeks in length, begins the
Monday after Labor Day and runs until the end of June. **Due to the
location of several rotations and attending state and local meetings, a
vehicle is mandatory during the program.
The West Virginia University Hospitals Dietetic Internship Program is granted
accreditation status through 2017 by the Accreditation Council for Education
in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
(AND), 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL
