Deans Welcome

Welcome to the West Virginia University School of Medicine
-Eastern Division Website
The Eastern Division was established in 2001 for the purpose of improving the quality of and access to health care for West Virginia residents. This is accomplished through education and direct and supportive health care services. The Division’s clinical faculty provide one-on-one training in community settings. This highly personalized approach to medical education not only teaches students important professional skills, it also helps them better understand the people they will ultimately serve.
As relatively a new campus we have developed new and innovative approaches to medical education. Core clinical content material in the third year is taught both developmentally and longitudinally. Rather than traditional clerkships, clinical experiences are divided into two six month modules. Each third year student will also follow a panel of patients during a weekly continuity clinic that occurs over the entire third year. The longitudinal approach allows core content material to be provided in a developmental sequence, with basic principles presented early in the year and more complex decision analysis and treatment approaches taught later. The one-on-one training with experienced clinicians provides ample opportunity for individualized training and procedures. Finally, each student is expected to give back to the community through service learning projects.
As Dean of the Eastern Division I am very proud of our educational programs, the commitment of our faculty to student education, and the difference we are making in our community. Please explore our website to learn more about educational opportunities in the Eastern Division.
