Family Medicine
Dr. Shannon Bentley graduated from the Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio in 1997. She subsequently completed a Family Medicine Residency in 2000 at the Wright State University Dayton Community Family Medicine Residency Program, followed by a Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas in 2001. She joined the staff of Jefferson Memorial Hospital in January 2006.
Dr. Bentley is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine in the WVU Harpers Ferry Rural Family Medicine Residency Program. She has extensive experience in the areas of Rural Family Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Emergency Medicine, GLBT healthcare, and Sports Medicine. In addition to high risk and operative obstetrics, Dr. Bentley practices full spectrum Family Medicine. She is a certified Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) instructor. In that capacity, she has instructed at ALSO courses in West Virginia, Ohio, and Idaho. She was named Family Medicine Educator of the Year by the Harpers Ferry Family Medicine Residents in June 2007.
Dr. Bentley has practiced in many areas of the country, including Ohio, Texas, and California. She has also been to Panama to provide Family Medicine care in rural communities. Eventually, she finally made it back to her Appalachian roots when she came to the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. She is proud to be a descendent of many generations of Appalachian coal miners and farmers from Kentucky and West Virginia, and is a 5th generation great grandchild of Daniel Boone. She is part of the first generation of her family to earn degrees in higher education. Dr. Bentley was driven to become a physician as a result of understanding firsthand the need for healthcare providers in rural areas.
Dr. Bentley enjoys camping, drawing, home improvement, travel, and time with her family and friends when she is not pursuing her passion of medicine. She has a particular soft spot for her two “pups,” Darby, who is a Labrador Retriever / Border Collie mix, and Morgan, a Labrador Retriever/?Beagle mix. She is an active supporter of the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and the Human Rights Campaign.
