Training Sites

The Residency Program at Harpers Ferry coordinates with several hospitals and centers in the Eastern Panhandle to give each resident extensive experience in rural health care. In addition to the Harpers Ferry Family Medicine Center, these facilities include Jefferson Memorial Hospital, WVU Maternity & Women's Health Center, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and WV City Hospital

Harpers Ferry Family Medicine
is staffed by WVU Eastern Division Family Medicine faculty and residents. Harpers Ferry Family Medicine is a center of healthcare education and services for the region.

Jefferson Hos

Jefferson Memorial Hospital is Harpers Ferrys primary hospital. Jefferson Memorial Hospital serves a rural county of about 45,000 people. Patients from Harpers Ferry Family Medicine are admitted to this 114-bed hospital. Services include a 24-hour level III emergency department, a 6-bed intensive care unit, tele-radiology, an obstetrics unit, surgical services, and rehabilitation services. The hospital uses electronic medical records and is currently working towards electronic physician order entry. Primary care physicians provide basic support, with excellent subspecialist backup in surgery, gynecology, obstetrics, ENT, and orthopedics.

WVU Maternity and Women's Health Center offers complete obstetrical services including prenatal care, vaginal as well as C-section deliveries, and newborn care. For high risk patients, consultation is available through the WVU Department of Obstetrics at Morgantown via the MDTV or MARS line, linking rural family medicine practice with the latest in obstetrical care.

Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg is a 739-bed regional center serving more than 129,000 veterans in mid-Atlantic rural communities. The geriatrics and pallative care team models state-of-the-art multidisciplinary geriatrics care. The alcohol and drug inpatient detox-rehab unit is a unique facility providing residents with an education in a family-based approach to addictive medicine and psychiatric modalities. A large 15-bed ICU provides an excellent experience for gaining command of acute care medicine and procedures. Surgery, radiology, and cardiology rotations round out the VA clinical opportunities.

City Hospital subsidiary of Gateway Regional Health System Inc., is a community hospital in Martinsburg, about 15 miles from Harpers Ferry. City Hospital offers a broad spectrum of medical, surgical, obstetric, pediatric, and mental health services. The current medical staff includes more than 100 practitioners, 85 percent of whom are board certified in the respective specialities. Several clinical rotations are held at City Hospital under the direction of clinical faculty in family medicine, pulmonary medicine, oncology, ENT, neurology, surgery, psychiatry, and orthopedics. This 260-bed hospital has a large primary care base and serves the rural population of Berkeley and Jefferson counties.
