GRADUATE NURSING

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION - IRENE AND DAISY MACGREGOR SCHOLARSHIP

A $5,000 Scholarship awarded for up to four years to students of high scholastic standing and character who have been accepted into or are pursuing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor (no pre-med) at an approved, accredited medical school. It is also available to students who have been accepted into or who are pursuing an approved course of study in psychiatric nursing, graduate level, at medical schools, colleges or universities. There is a preference to females "if equally qualified." Deadline: April 15. Applications are available in the Office of Financial Aid.

HEALTH SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP

Students in their last year of a master's degree program preparing for roles as a nurse practitioner or nurse midwife may apply. In addition students who have a career goal of teaching nursing in an undergraduate program can also qualify for the scholarship. The award is for $10,000 and awardees must sign a contract to practice in primary care or in nursing education for at least two years in an underserved area of the state. Applications are available between August 1 and October 15 of each award year. NURSES EDUCATIONAL FUNDS, INC.

MARGARET FAE PERRY NURSING BOOK SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship provides funds for the purchase of textbooks for graduate students enrolled in the School of Nursing. Recipients shall demonstrate academic promise and financial need. A student who is a recipient one year is eligible for consideration in any other year. Awards will be determined by the Financial Aid Office in conjunction with the School of Nursing. 

PROFESSIONAL NURSE TRAINEESHIP PROGRAM

This program authorized by the Nurse Training Act of 1975, provides for the payment of tuition and fees and a monthly stipend for eligible applicants (providing sufficient funds are available).  Recipients must be 1) US citizens, 2) graduates of a state approved School of Nursing, 3) currently licensed as a professional nurse, and 4) enrolled full time.  No application is necessary.  Awards will be determined by the Financial Aid Office in conjunction with the School of Nursing.  Awards are usually made in October of the award year. 

DONALD R ROBERTS MD SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarship awarded to a regularly enrolled graduate student in the certified nurse practitioner course or its successor program.  Student must be preparing for a career in primary health care and planning to practice in a rural area of West Virginia.  Recipient must demonstrate need for financial assistance, high academic promise and have graduated from a West Virginia high school, with preference given to Barbour, Nicholas, Pendleton, Pocahontas, Randolph, Tucker or Webster counties. Must complete the FAFSA by March 1.

STUDENT SCHOLARS IN CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE AND STROKE

The Scientific councils of the American Heart Association are pleased to offer student scholars a stipend to study cardiovascular diseases and stroke.  Students eligible for application include those in medicine or students in a masters or equivalent program (nursing, public heath, nutrition and other allied health disciplines).  For application forms and further information, contact: Autumn Allan, of the American Heart Assoc., by phone at (214)706-1181, by email at autumna@heart.org or on the web at  www.americanheart.org/.

WEST VIRGINIA COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

Grant program administered by the National Health Service Corp.   Scholarship provides money for students from health profession shortage areas in WV interested in committing to practice in a health profession shortage area one year for every year of support received, or a minimum of two years.  Forty percent of the scholarship money must come from the community (i.e. the specific health profession shortage area where the student has residence).  Student is responsible for making contact with the community representative, often an administrator from the primary care clinic or hospital, who will then raise the 40% community contribution.  The individual community, in conjunction with the West Virginia Community Scholarship Advisory Panel, determines the dollar amount for the award.  Federal regulations stipulate that the money can only be expended for tuition and fees and other reasonable living expenses incurred while in attendance at the school.  A contract with the community organization and WVU must be signed and penalties do apply for breach of contract.  For more information contact:  Jacki Masi, Office of Rural Health, WVU, PO Box 9003, Morgantown, WV  26506.  Phone (304) 293-1783. 

WEST VIRGINIA RURAL PRIMARY CARE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Program funded by the Bureau of Primary Care Department of Health & Human Services and administered locally by the WVU Office of Rural Health to provide stipends to Graduate Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Midwifes and other select students for time spent in rural areas completing rural rotations.  Students must apply to and be recommended by one of the WV Rural Health Education Partnership Consortium sites.  Stipends are $75 for each day of clinical rotation in a rural community for a minimum of 20 working days and a maximum of 100 working days per year.  For more information contact:  Jacki Masi, Office of Rural Health, WVU, PO Box 9003, Morgantown, WV  26506.  Phone (304) 293-1783. 

GERALDINE CORE WILLIS SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarship is available to nursing students.  Students who met the following requirements will be considered:  1)  resident of WV; 2)  graduate of a WV high school; 3) demonstrate financial need; and 4) have a 3.0 GPA.  Must file the FAFSA by March 1 to be considered.  Awards determined by School of Nursing Scholarship Committee.

PATRICK AND RUTH SMITH NURSING SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is for students enrolled in the Doctor of Science Nursing (DSN) program, or the PhD in nursing. Recipients shall demonstrate academic promise and financial need. A student who is a recipient one year is eligible for consideration in any other year. First preference will be for students in their third or fourth year of summer study. Recipients shall be determined by the School of Nursing and the Office of Financial Aid.
 
 

LOAN OPPORTUNITY

NURSING STUDENT LOAN

The School of Nursing participates in this federal loan program approved under Public Law 94-643.  This program which is a source of financial assistance through the federal government, provides loan funds to participating institutions, such as West Virginia University.   These loans are restricted to students who 1) are citizens or nationals of the United States; 2) are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as at least half time students; and 3) demonstrate financial need through filing the FAFSA.  The interest rate is 5% simple interest and loans are repayable to the school over a ten year period beginning nine months after completion of studies.  Preference must be given to full time students with "exceptional need". Must complete the FAFSA by March 1. Parental information is required regardless of dependency status.
