Loan cancellation if you:
Undertake service as
a full-time teacher in a public or other non-profit elementary or secondary
school which is in a school district of local educational agency which
is eligible for funds under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education
Act of 1965 and which has been designated by the Secretary in accordance
with the provisions of Section 465 (a) (2) of the Higher Education Act
as a school with a high enrollment of students from low income families;
Undertake service as a full-time
teacher of handicapped children (including mentally retarded, hard of hearing,
deaf, speech impaired, visually handicapped, seriously emotionally disturbed,
orthopedically impaired, children with specific learning disabilities or
other health impaired children who by reason thereof require special education
and related services) in public or other nonprofit elementary or secondary
school system.
Undertake service as
a full time staff member of a Head Start program if that Head Start program
is operated for a period which is comparable to a full year in the locality
and my salary is not more than the salary of a comparable employee of the
local education agency. Cancellation will be at the rate of 15% of
the total principal amount plus the interest on the unpaid balance for
each complete school year or the equivalent of service in a Head Start
program.
Undertake service as a full
time special education teacher, including teachers of infants, toddlers,
children or youth with disabilities in a public other non-profit elementary
or secondary school system.
Undertake service as a full-time
qualified professional provider of early intervention services in a public
or other non-profit program under public supervision.
Undertake service as a full
time teacher of mathematics, science, foreign languages, bilingual education,
or any other filed of expertise that is determined by the state education
agency to have a shortage of qualified teachers.
Undertake service as a full-time
nurse or medical technician providing health care services. A medical
technician is considered a allied health professional (working in fields
such as therapy, dental hygiene, medical technology or nutrition) who is
certified, registered or licensed by the appropriate state agency in the
state in which he or she provides health care services; and allied health
professional is someone who assists, facilitates or complements the work
of physicians and other specialists in the health care system.
Undertake service as a full-time
employee of a public or private non-profit child or family service agency
who is providing or supervising the provision of services to high risk
children who are from low income communities and the families of those
children.
The average cancellation
rate is:
15% - first and second years
20% - third and fourth years
30% - fifth year
You may also qualify for
cancellation if you serve as a member of the Armed Forces of the United
States (in an area of hostilities that qualified for special pay under
Section 310 of Title 37 of the United States Code), up to 50% of the principal
amount of this loan plus interest thereon will be cancelled at the rate
of 12 ½% of the total principal amount plus interest on the unpaid
balance for each complete year of service.
