Meeting Notes for July 20, 1999

Present

Terrance Burton, Valerie Frey-McClung, Kevin Halbritter, Kenneth Landreth, Deborah Lewis, MaryBeth Mandich, Eilene McDaniel, Amir Ramezan, Laura Roth, Norton Smith, and Alex Yohn.
Electronic Directory Demonstration

Amir Ramezan, Director of Operations for Academic Technologies, gave a demonstration of the prototype for a Health Sciences Center-wide electronic directory.  The HSC Executive Committee has endorsed the electronic directory.

HSC Web Presence Project

Alex Yohn presented the conceptual map of desired information resources for the HSC web presence project.  Program Team members were encouraged to scrutinize the map for omissions, as well as additional linkages.  The next step in the process to redesign the HSC web presence will be to identify what web resources are available now and what should be available within the next year.

Academic Technologies has begun exploring possible designs for the tool box web pages.  Actual development of the web pages won’t be started until the conceptual map is completed.

Survey of Technology in Instruction

A proposed questionnaire to measure technology in instruction within the Health Sciences Center was distributed to members.  The questionnaire evolved out of efforts of the Education Focus Team to strategically plan for information and technology needs.  The questionnaire would help identify to what extent technology is currently used in teaching, barriers to incorporating technology in instruction, as well as faculty members who would be willing to mentor their colleagues in the use of technology in teaching.  The survey will be distributed in mass to faculty members by e-mail in mid-September.  A limited number of hard copys of the questionnaire will also be distributed.

Program Team members were encouraged to send their comments about the survey instrument to Valerie Frey-McClung within the next two weeks.

Announcements

Laura Roth reported that the new laptops will be shipped out Friday, July 23, 1999.  Terrance Burton noted that the library now has an employee who will handle Inter Library Loans.  The new employee will also be responsible for document delivery this fall.  In addition, MD Consult is now fully operational.

Next Meeting

The next Program Team meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 17 at 3:00 in the John E. Jones Conference Center.
