Research
One of the principal objectives of the WVU Injury Control Research Center is to advance scientific discovery in the field of injury prevention and control, including the identification and characterization of injury risks, and the development of new and effective injury prevention and control strategies. Towards that end, the Center has achieved substantial growth in the number of affiliated researchers, research funding and productivity. For example, the number of injury researchers affiliated with the ICRC grew from 17 in 2007 to 49 in 2011. Seven of the new WVU faculty members are investigators who are new to the field of injury control. In addition to these individuals, the WVU ICRC has engaged and mentored several other researchers who are already in the field, but are in the early stages of their academic careers. As a result, we have helped to successfully launch the injury control careers of several emerging investigators.
In implementing a vigorous research program, Center faculty members have been highly productive, as demonstrated by the exponential growth in our scholarly productivity. In the past five years (2007–2011) the ICRC faculty produced over 400 injury-focused publications.
The Center’s research program has involved extensive collaborations with colleagues throughout the U.S. and internationally. We maintain formal affiliations with investigators from six other U.S. and five international universities. These collaborations have led directly to new and expanded partnerships, including an entire new Center devoted to the study of Preventing Violence Across the Lifespan (PreVAiL).
