Institute of Occupational & Environmental Health

Community Services:

The Institute of Occupational and Environmental Health (IOEH) provides multi-disciplinary services to meet the complex health and safety needs of West Virginians, those from surrounding regions who work here, and area employers. In addition, IOEH physicians respond to environmental issues affecting the public health. Outreach services include on site surveys and training to assist in monitoring and controlling work place hazards.

The Institute is linked with the Prevention Center within the University and the Schools of Engineering, Industrial Hygiene and Safety, Business, and Nursing.

Customized Services are available in:

  • Epidemiology consultation
  • Workers' Compensation care and claim management
  • Work site wellness programs.
  • Occupational health work site worker compensation cost analysis.
  • Streamlined and effective application of OSHA-mandated health and safety programs.
  • On-site worker safety.
IOEH staff are available to share and interpret information on state and federal regulations that are related to both worker and environmental health.

Information and Referrals

Physicians from the Institute of Occupational and Environmental Health provide full spectrum occupational and environmental medicine care. These services are:

  • Workers' Compensation injury and illness treatment.
  • Chemical exposure and workplace disease clustering evaluations.
  • Toxic exposures at home.
  • Referral care for complex injuries and illnesses.
  • Pre-placement evaluations.
  • OSHA-mandated surveillance examinations including lead, respirator, asbestos, silica.
  • Certification evaluation for respiratory program
  • Department of Transportation (DOT/DMV) examinations
  • Fitness for duty evaluations
  • Rehabilitation Services--Worker education on prevention, physical therapy, upper extremity re-conditioning, and work hardening.
Occupational clinical services emphasize worker surveillance to ensure that appropriate measures are used to protect workers from acute and chronic workplace exposures. Customized programs are available for injury and illness prevention, as well as worker wellness.
