Network & TelecommunicationsInfrastructureThe Network & Telecommunications unit supports and maintains a state-of-the-art network infrastructure capable of supporting integrated voice, video, and data applications and provides network resources to our user community. The HSC network provides Gigabit Ethernet service in the core and to servers, 10MB/100MB Ethernet to workstations, 802.11g wireless access in our student network, and firewall technology supporting a multi-layer security model meeting the security needs of our academic health care center. A central server environment supporting file/print/application sharing, anti-virus, anti-spam, SAN (storage area network) availability, and collaborative groupware software for e-mail, calendar, document sharing is provided to Health Sciences Center students, faculty, staff, and administration. Internet and Internet2 service is provided through the WVU main campus network. Two redundant Gigabit Ethernet links interconnect the HSC to the main campus. Our Network & Telecommunications group provides network support to our Charleston and Martinsburg campuses. Connectivity to our remote campuses is provided through the WV SUN (WV State Unified Network) operated by WVNET (WV Network for Educational Telecommuting). TelecommunicationsThis unit coordinates and provides all telecommunication services for the Health Sciences Center. In 2004, the Health Sciences Center implemented a Voice Over IP (VoIP) system using Cisco technology. This system was jointly installed by Health Sciences Center and the main campus IT groups. The system provides greater flexibility in managing our phone environment over the previous ISDN system managed by Verizon and has proven to be more cost effective. All telephone service requests are managed in-house providing more efficient, faster service for our customers and cost savings since we no longer contract externally for phone repairs/adds/moves/changes. |
