Ex-Votos Lecture February 7th, 3 PM

Please join the Health Sciences Library on February 7th at 3 PM classroom LC 1 for a presentation by Dr. Janet Snyder of the WVU Art History program, who will speak on “Reciprocity in Ancient and Medieval Ex-Votos.” In her talk, Dr. Snyder will discuss votive offerings and ex-votos, including three-dimensional and sculpted pieces. Light refreshments will be served after the talk.

This lecture coincides the National Library of Medicine traveling poster exhibition Everyday Miracles: Medical Imagery in Ex-Votos being hosted by the Health Sciences Library from Jan. 19 to Feb. 24. Ex-votos are devotional paintings created to thank saints or deities for a healing, blessing, or significant event. These expressive works provide insight into how ordinary people thought about and coped with disease and healing.

Henkel Physicians Exhibit

The Health Sciences Library is hosting an exhibit from the National Library of Medicine entitled "The Henkel Physicians: A Family's Life in Letters" from October 31st to December 17th.

Several members of the Henkel family studied medicine after they settled in New Market, Virginia in 1790. Their letters richly document the daily life of men in medicine in the 19th century and reveal the challenges, rewards and responsibilities of the profession. The exhibit features a selection of writings that cover local events, professional jealousies, the Civil War and the testimony of the Henkel physicians in a murder trial.

For more information on the exhibit and to access the original Henkel Collection of letters visit http://www.nlm.nih.gov/hmd/digicolls/henkel

Most of the full text have been added since 1997, but there is strong retrospective full text coverage for older graduate works.

For dissertations not included in full text, please do an interlibrary loan request.

To access ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, go here http://www.libraries.wvu.edu/databases/database.php?id=321. Please contact us if you have any questions or comments.

Sections of Library Will Be Closed Jan. 11-13

The study table area in the library and the stacks will be closed from 7 AM-3 PM on January 11-13, due to work on the new cooling tower on the roof. The area will be open after 3 PM and will not affect the computer workstations area. This closure may also affect the processing of Interlibrary Loan requests. WVU Libraries Acquire Scopus Database

The WVU Libraries are happy to announce an early holiday present, the purchase of the extremely powerful database, Scopus. During the trial of Scopus, we received feedback from some of your colleagues. Here's a few quotes from them:

"I have been using Scopus every day and I think it is great."

"I recently worked a bit with the Scopus database and I found it to be very helpful."

"I can search for a keyword and it gives me journals with similar names/results. I can then 'drag and drop' journals and see their comparison over time in a chart. I think this is one of the greatest features of the website. This compares how the journals have performed relative to each other in the last few years."

As the last comment indicates, Scopus is not only useful for subject searching, but also provides a means to evaluate journal impact and an authors scholarship. Scopus is available on the Databases page. If you have questions about Scopus, please contact the Health Sciences Library Reference Desk.

Electronic Institutional Document Repository (eIDR) Update

The University Libraries are presently in the process of migration and set up for a new institutional repository system.  This affects the ETD, EHT and ESRA document collections.  The WVU eIDR system has been closed to new deposits as of fall 2008, but is still available for search access.  The anticipated launch date for the new system, "wvuScholar" is the end of February 2009.

Graduate and Honors students who intend to graduate in the spring 2009 semester will need to submit electronic documents online in the new system once it becomes available.  Regular updates are available at http://www.wvu.edu/~thesis/News/WVU_IR_News.htm.  Graduate students may deliver forms and fee(s) to the Wise Library Acquisitions Department at any time.

We ask for your patience as we complete this major project.  Comments or questions may be sent to John.Hagen@mail.wvu.edu.

Carcinogenic Potency Database (CPDB) Now Accessible via TOXNET

CPDB, the Carcinogenic Potency Database, was developed by the Carcinogenic Potency Project at the University of California, Berkeley, and by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It reports analyses of animal cancer tests on 1547 chemicals. Results for each chemical are now searchable via the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET(r)). http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/

CPDB includes 6540 chronic, long-term animal cancer tests (both positive and negative for carcinogenicity) from the general published literature as well as from the National Cancer Institute and the National Toxicology Program. Such tests are used in support of cancer risk assessments for humans. Information that is important in the interpretation of bioassays is reported in CPDB for each experiment.

Users can search for results on each chemical in TOXNET via chemical name or name fragment, or by Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (RN). Results include a summary for each sex-species tested, including carcinogenicity, target organs, and carcinogenic potency values. Detailed results from each experiment on the particular chemical are given in a plot format suitable for screen viewing. Chemical structure, InChI (http://www.iupac.org/inchi/), and SMILES codes (http://www.daylight.com/smiles/) are reported.
