New Resources

The Health Sciences Library has two new electronic resources. ExamMaster is an online test prep resource for the Health Sciences. It covers USMLE, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, SPEX, Emergency Medicine, Pharmacy (NAPLEX), Dentistry (NBDE Part 1), Physician Assistant (PANCE), and Family Nurse Practitioner. There are extensive question banks for each discipline that allow the user to take realistic practice exams.

To get started with ExamMaster, go to http://www.exammaster2.com/wdsentry/wvuhsl.htm and click on "First Time Registration." Each user must register to receive a password to use with this resource. Once registered, the resource may be accessed from anywhere by using the above URL.

The other new resource is the AMA Manual of Style Online, 10th ed. This contains everything that scientific and medical researchers, writers, and editors need to produce well-organized, clear, readable, and authoritative manuscripts. This is a collaborative resource between Oxford University Press, JAMA, and the Archives Journals. Both of these resources can be accessed from http://www.libraries.wvu.edu/databases.

The HSC Library is also pleased to announce the addition of Psychiatry Online to our electronic resources. A portal to significant psychiatry references, this resource includes DSM-IV-TR and The American Journal of Psychiatry as its cornerstones. It also features the full-text of seven psychiatric textbooks, six psychiatric journals, the APA Practice Guidelines, patient information, the latest journal headlines, and clinical & research news. Email alerts, RSS feeds, and PDA downloads are available for the journals in Psychiatry Online. Links to both of these resources can be found on the WVU Libraries’ Databases webpage at www.libraries.wvu.edu/databases. Please send any comments, questions, or feedback about ExamMaster or Psychiatry Online to Susan Arnold at susan.arnold@mail.wvu.edu.

Electronic Institutional Document Repository (eIDR) Update

The University Libraries are presently in the process of migration and set up for a new institutional repository system.  This affects the ETD, EHT and ESRA document collections.  The WVU eIDR system has been closed to new deposits as of fall 2008, but is still available for search access.  The anticipated launch date for the new system, "wvuScholar" is the end of February 2009.

Graduate and Honors students who intend to graduate in the spring 2009 semester will need to submit electronic documents online in the new system once it becomes available.  Regular updates are available at http://www.wvu.edu/~thesis/News/WVU_IR_News.htm.  Graduate students may deliver forms and fee(s) to the Wise Library Acquisitions Department at any time.

We ask for your patience as we complete this major project.  Comments or questions may be sent to John.Hagen@mail.wvu.edu.

Library Catalog Down During Upgrade Jan. 6-9

Due to system maintenance, some library services will be unavailable this week beginning Tuesday the 6th and extending possibly through Friday the 9th. These services include MountainLynx, the library catalog, which is getting a completely new interface upgrade. Other systems that will not be available include checking in books and placing requests for Book Express, E-ZBorrow, Interlibrary Loan, and Depository books. Users can still check books out from the libraries during the upgrade. The Libraries appreciate your patience while we improve our services over the semester break.

Faculty of 1000 Biology

The WVU Libraries have obtained a subscription to Faculty of 1000 Biology as a result of our new membership in BioMed Central.

Faculty of 1000 Biology is an online literature awareness service comprising thousands of selections and evaluations of the most important papers within all areas of biological research. It is organized by subjects such as biochemistry, cell biology, genomics & genetics, immunology, pharmacology & drug discovery, physiology, etc.

Faculty of 1000 Biology can be accessed from the Health Sciences Library Database List, or directly by going to http://www.f1000biology.com. (For off-campus access, it must be accessed through the library database list.) A five-minute Powerpoint site walkthrough can be viewed here.

Please Ask a Librarian, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about this new online resource.

Extended Hours Trial

The Health Sciences Library will be commencing another trial of extended hours beginning Friday, January 25 and running through Sunday, March 9.  In addition to staying open until 11:00 PM on Friday and Saturday nights, we will be opening at 10:00 AM on Sunday morning, and opening at 7:30 AM Monday - Friday.  These extended hours are reflected on the library's hours calendar, which can be found online at http://www.libraries.wvu.edu/hours/display/calendar/hsl.

New E-Journals

With the start of the new year, the Health Sciences Library has some new e-journal subscriptions. Some of these include International Immunology, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, International Journal of Epidemiology, and Science's STKE (now called Science Signaling as of January, 2008).

Carcinogenic Potency Database (CPDB) Now Accessible via TOXNET

CPDB, the Carcinogenic Potency Database, was developed by the Carcinogenic Potency Project at the University of California, Berkeley, and by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It reports analyses of animal cancer tests on 1547 chemicals. Results for each chemical are now searchable via the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET(r)). http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/

CPDB includes 6540 chronic, long-term animal cancer tests (both positive and negative for carcinogenicity) from the general published literature as well as from the National Cancer Institute and the National Toxicology Program. Such tests are used in support of cancer risk assessments for humans. Information that is important in the interpretation of bioassays is reported in CPDB for each experiment.

Users can search for results on each chemical in TOXNET via chemical name or name fragment, or by Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (RN). Results include a summary for each sex-species tested, including carcinogenicity, target organs, and carcinogenic potency values. Detailed results from each experiment on the particular chemical are given in a plot format suitable for screen viewing. Chemical structure, InChI (http://www.iupac.org/inchi/), and SMILES codes (http://www.daylight.com/smiles/) are reported.

Website has Changed

The library's website has a new and improved design and organization. If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail Jessica Tapia.

PubMed LinkOut Now Available Off-Campus

Users now have access to our full-text journal subscriptions when searching PubMed from remote locations. Be sure to enter PubMed through our library website, and to display results so that the abstracts show. Any articles that show a WV Full-Text icon should link to the full-text article through that icon. Users will be asked to enter their usernames/passwords for remote access to library resources. If you have any questions about this, please call the Reference Desk at 293-6810.
