All West Virginia residents and non-residents 18 years of age and over may apply for a resident/non-resident borrowing card with a valid photo ID (i.e. driver's license, passport, etc.) and proof of current address (i.e. recent utility bill).

Holders of the card may access library electronic resources at computer workstations located within the WVU Libraries. Online authentication will be required. Cards are valid for one year from the date of issue and are renewable on a yearly basis. Cash and checks will be accepted as payment. A $5.00 replacement charge will apply in the case of a lost card. A laminated card will be issued. A picture ID must also be shown when checking out materials.

    Borrowing Periods

For all borrowers are as follows:

    Books - 2 weeks
    AV materials - 2 weeks
    Unbound Journals - 1 day
    Bound Journals - 3 days
Reserve materials - 2 hours in the library only

    Recalls and Holds

If an item that you wish to use is currently charged out to another borrower, you may place a recall, a hold, or use E-Z Borrow to request that item. You can find the recall and hold procedure here.

For both book and journal requests we recommend using the recall option. If another borrower has a book or journal checked out from Health Sciences, you can prevent them from renewing the item by placing a recall request on the item (a hold request will not). If you have an item (book or a journal from Health Sciences Library) checked out that another borrower has placed a recall request for, you will be notified by mail that a recall request on that item has been placed on it. You will then be given a new due date to return the item before the recall fine charges go into effect.

Recall fines are $3.00 per day beginning with the new due date given in the recall notification.

    Overdue Fines

These fines are allocated for all borrowers for each item they have overdue:

AV materials - 25 cents per day
All Journals - $1.00 per day
Reserve Materials - 2 cents per minute
    Recalls - $3.00 per day

Your account will be blocked once your fines reach or exceed $5.00. If your fines have been referred to the Office of Student Accounts, you will be required to pay through the Office of Student Accounts.

    Renewals

The procedure to renew books, bound journals, and audiovisual materials can be found here.

WVU Faculty, Staff, and Students may renew materials up to 5 times. WV Residents /Regional Borrowers may renew materials up to 5 times. Health Sciences Library books, AV materials and bound journals may be renewed online anytime between the day you initially check out the item and the item's due date. However, you may not renew an overdue item or an item recalled by another patron.

Borrowing Policies at other WVU Libraries

The Health Sciences Library's Borrowing policy differs slightly from the other libraries. Please refer to the WVU Libraries' Borrowing Services web page and to the Law Library's Circulation and Loan Policies web page for further information regarding their policies.
