Not On Tobacco
WHAT IS NOT ON TOBACCO (N-O-T)?
Developed by Drs. Horn and Dino of WVU, N-O-T is the American Lung Association's voluntary program designed to help teens:
stop smoking, reduce the number of cigarettes smoked, increase healthy lifestyle behaviors, and improve life management skills.
N-O-T includes a 10-session curriculum and booster sessions conducted by facilitators.N-O-T facilitators are identified through a set of selection criteria and training emphasizes nicotine addiction, curriculum content and implementation, as well as group process. N-O-T is gender-sensitive, separating participants by gender, and tailors content and delivery to the adolescent population. The program emphasizes daily life management skills such as stress management and healthy lifestyle behaviors such as nutrition and exercise. It also offers awards and incentives to the teens and facilitators, and includes evaluation and mental health referral protocols. N-O-T has been extensively evaluated over the past 10 years (see "Publications"). The program is used in 48 states, has been translated to Spanish, and an American Indian adaptation is underway. Over 150,000 teens have been served by N-O-T, with 1 in 5 quitting smoking.
