Fashion Show Raises $10K to Benefit Betty Puskar Breast Care Center
The 2008 Betty Puskar Breast Care Center Fashion Show at Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa in Morgantown raised $10,000 for the Breast Care Center at West Virginia University. The October 8 event featuring breast cancer survivors and local women who became models for a day drew hundreds of residents from Morgantown and surrounding communities.
This year’s show, “Step By Step,” was a tribute to breast cancer survivors for their remarkable strength and courage throughout their cancer journeys.
“We are very proud to host an event that honors breast cancer survivors,” said Judith Schreiman, director of the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center at WVU. “They are incredibly inspiring to all women and especially those affected by breast cancer, a disease that is anything but glamorous. The fashion show is about them. It will be their night to shine.”
Ashley Banks and Ashley Neal, postgraduate athletes of the WVU women’s soccer team, also sashayed down the runway. They and their fellow teammates raised more than $36,000 for the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center over the past five years.
“The fashion show is a great opportunity for a great cause,” Banks said.
“It’s another way we can give back to the community to help fight a disease that has affected a lot of people we know,” Neal said.
Attendees were treated to hors d’ oeuvres, prizes and raffles. Models sported fashions from Vance’s Blues, Coni & Franc, Jack & Jill, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Lakeview Resort, Pines Country Club and Ridgeview Racket Club. Morgantown’s Spa Roma provided hairstyling and make-up.
WVU’s Breast Care Center is the most comprehensive facility of its kind in West Virginia. It provides state-of-the-art technology in a caring environment sensitive to women’s needs. The multidisciplinary team of experts is dedicated to obtaining the most accurate screening and diagnostic results. The center maintains an active program of educational outreach aimed at prevention and early detection.
The center was created through the generosity of Betty Puskar, a Morgantown philanthropist, who traveled out of state for breast cancer treatment. She wanted to establish a center where West Virginia women could receive the highest quality of care close to home.
