Several members of the Clinical Trials Research Unit at West Virginia University have received national certification in their field of expertise.
All of the research nurses— Ryan Adamec, Connie Bolyard, Sue Collins, Shannon Filburn and Sylvia McEwuen— passed a national exam administered by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals to become certified clinical research coordinators.
The ACRP exam tests candidates in areas such as management of clinical trials, scheduling and screening of potential study participants, and documentation knowledge.
The Academy’s code of ethics states that members shall affirm their commitment to upholding the highest standards of personal and professional behavior in the conduct of their work in clinical research and the advancement of medicine.
“It’s kind of like the Good Housekeeping seal of approval, only in clinical research,” said John Naim, unit director.
In addition to the research nurses, the regulatory specialist for the CTRU, Leah Darr, passed a national exam administered by the Society of Clinical Research Associates, to become a certified research professional. SoCRA created the certification program to create an accepted standard of knowledge, education and experience by which clinical research professionals will be recognized by the medical research community.
