Kim Mellie, faculty sponsor of the South Middle School TSA Club, Melanie Swisher, club member, present a check for $500 to Scot C. Remick, MD, director of the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center at WVU. |
The Cancer Center has been a partner in education with South Middle School in Morgantown for nearly nine years. The Partnerships in Education Program is a statewide initiative linking schools and students with businesses and organizations in the community in a cooperative, mutually beneficial relationship. The program brings the expertise, skills and people from both entities together to share ideas, knowledge, resources and a vision for the future.
The MBRCC uses the partnership as an educational opportunity to raise cancer awareness among students and to nurture their interest in cancer research. Over the years cancer experts from WVU have made presentations to students on the negative effects of tobacco use and participated in the school’s Technology Night. In return South Middle staff and students have assisted the cancer center at its Kids Fair exhibit in April. The student body also has participated in several fundraisers and has donated nearly $5,000 to benefit patients at the MBRCC since the partnership began.
The Technology Student Association Chapter at South Middle presented Dr. Scot Remick, director of WVU’s Cancer Center, a $500 check this past November for breast cancer research.
