REQUEST FOR APPOINTMENT IN THE WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
MARY BABB RANDOLPH CANCER CENTER

I hereby request for appointment of membership in the West Virginia University Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center (MBRCC). I understand and accept the following obligations, which such an appointment confers:

 

1.      Support the basic concept, mission and goals of the MBRCC (page 2).

2.      Participate in collaborative efforts and communications about research, patient care, prevention and education/outreach initiatives.

3.      Provide the MBRCC with the information necessary to maintain current information about scientific activity, grant support, education and outreach, and clinical trials in order to maintain the Center's database on oncology-related activities.

4.      Report all funded activities to the MBRCC at the time of appointment and as requested by the Director, MBRCC.

5.      Include recognition of my appointment in the MBRCC on all academic papers, grants, journal articles, poster sessions and/or abstracts related to cancer treatment, research, education/outreach and prevention; provide abstracts and papers to the Director for distribution to MBRCC staff as appropriate.

6.      Request funds in grant applications to support the shared resource services provided to them by the MBRCC.

7.      Participate in the MBRCC grant program project, training grant application and cancer-related educational activities, as requested.

8.      Attend cancer seminars and program meetings sponsored by the MBRCC, as appropriate.

Guidelines for Membership and Appointment in the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center

Membership in the West Virginia University Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center (MBRCC) will be offered to those physicians, research scientists, education/outreach and prevention control specialists whose primary objective is to organize and help accomplish the basic concept, mission and goals of the Cancer Center. The basic concept of the Cancer Center is that it is an umbrella for all cancer related-activities on campus with objectives to: (1) enhance multidisciplinary patient care in order to improve outcomes of patients with cancer, (2) maximize the MBRCC's research potential; and (3) directly provide and indirectly enhance education about cancer at all levels. The central concept of the Cancer center is to generate interactions among individuals that enhance patient care, research and education. Associate membership will be offered to physicians, research scientists, education/outreach and prevention control specialists who contribute to the central concept of the MBRCC.  Associate membership will also be offered to professional students, pre- and post-doctoral trainees and professional staff without faculty appointments who are closely aligned to the MBRCC. Appointment to the MBRCC recognizes a level of academic excellence in and dedication to teaching, research, prevention, patient care, and community outreach activities in cancer. Members of the program are eligible for consideration of access to all privileges of the MBRCC, including services, uses of space and financial support.

MEMBERSHIP GUIDELINES

            Two types of membership in the MBRCC are available to those whose clinical, educational or basic science interests are related to cancer and who wish to contribute to the advancement of oncology research and/or patient care at West Virginia University.

 

I.                    Membership in the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center (MBRCC). Appointment as a Member or Associate Member in the MBRCC may be conferred to faculty members involved in significant research, education, patient care or community outreach activities related to cancer. This appointment recognizes a level of excellence and dedication in these endeavors.

 

A.     Criteria for Inclusion

1.      Any individual may initiate application for membership. The application process is as described for appointees (see section I.B.).

2.      The Director, MBRCC appoints as "Member, MBRCC" faculty of West Virginia University who's clinical, research, prevention, and/or educational contributions directly contribute to the cancer program.

3.      Appointment of "Associate Member, MBRCC" by the MBRCC Director is conferred upon physicians, research scientists, and education/outreach specialists whose clinical, research, prevention, and/or educational/outreach programs may be largely off-campus but never the less contribute to the central concept of the Cancer Center.  Associate membership can also be conferred to profession students (graduate, medical or post-graduate students) whose program is in clinical, research, prevention or educational/outreach fields involved with cancer; as well as members of the staff without faculty-academic appointments who make significant contributions to patient care, research and community outreach activities of the MBRCC.


  B.     Process

1.      A prospective Member or Associate  Member makes initial application to the MBRCC with the recommendation of his/her Department Chair or Director. Professional students and trainees must be recommended by their faculty mentor or program director for Associate membership. Staff Members must also be recommended by a Member.

2.      Invitation to apply for appointment may also be initiated by the MBRCC Director.

3.      The application for Members should include:

a.       a current curriculum vitae

b.      a description of scientific, clinical or education interests

c.       a description of current and past funding

d.      a description of current and/or planned interactions with the MBRCC

e.       Letter of recommendation from the applicant's department chairperson

4.      Application for Associate Member should include:

a.       a current curriculum vitae or resumé

b.      a description of scientific, clinical or education interests

c.       a description of current and/or planned interactions with the MBRCC

d.      Letter of recommendation from a Member, MBRCC

5.      The Director will establish a procedure to define and review membership.

6.      Membership will be granted for a period for three years, at which time the member will submit an application for reappointment as described for appointees.

7.      Upon conclusion of the 3-year membership appointment, an appointee should submit a letter requesting re-appointment and provide all materials required for initial membership with the exception of a letter of recommendation.

C.     Obligations

 

1.      To support the basic concept, mission and goals of the MBRCC.

2.      To participate fully in collaborative efforts and communications about research and patient care initiatives.

3.      To provide the MBRCC with the information to maintain current data about scientific activity, grant support, publications, abstracts, educational courses and clinical trials in order to maintain the Center's database on oncology-related activities.

4.      To request funds in grant applications to support the shared resource services provided to them and supported by the MBRCC.

5.      Attend cancer seminars and program meetings sponsored by the MBRCC, as appropriate.

6.      Participate in program project grants, training grants and cancer-related educational activities, sponsored by MBRCC, as appropriate.

7.      Recognize the appointment in the MBRCC on published reports and grant applications.

D.     Benefits

 

1.      Notification of oncology-related funding opportunities from the MBRCC, opportunity to apply for MBRCC funding or grants and student support.

a.       Undergraduate student support

b.      Graduate student support

c.       Research funding

d.      Other, as available (e.g., student travel, publication costs, journal procurement, etc.).

2.      Priority consideration and discount usage for MBRCC supported shared facilities and resources.

a.       Research Nurse/data management.

b.      DNA core facility

c.       FACS/Flow cytometry

d.      Glassware washing/sterilization facility

e.       Information systems, including specific database

f.        Clinical laboratories

g.       Research and office laboratory space.

h.       Secretarial support and use of office equipment, such as copier, Codonex color printer, desktop publication system for publication-quality prints and fax.

i.         Use of MBRCC conference rooms and library.

j.        Media and public relations services provided by MBRCC communications office.

k.      Other shared resources, as they are identified and become available.

3.      Clerical support for the development of cancer-related grant applications.

4.      Financial support for seminar speakers to participate in established seminar series.

5.      Invitations to attend or represent the MBRCC at special seminars and events.

6.      Inclusion in relevant promotional materials such as the MBRCC publications, referral/outreach activities, CME programs developed by the cancer center.
