New Society Creates Impact

West Virginia Oncology Society logo.Membership in the West Virginia Oncology Society continues to rise. Eighty-five percent of cancer physicians from around the state have joined the professional group since it became a formally recognized organization last year. The WVOS gives cancer specialists a platform to share ideas and to represent their interests and those of their patients before governmental entities, insurance carriers, pharmaceutical companies, and the public.

The ultimate goal of the group is to improve cancer care in West Virginia. Society members have begun identifying ways to collaborate in research, education, and patient care. One of their first initiatives, the establishment of a statewide clinical trials network, is gaining momentum, and three West Virginia hospitals have recently joined the Society.

“The membership remains very committed to extending clinical trials at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center in Morgantown to cancer patients at community hospitals and centers in the state,” said Jame Abraham, MD, chief of Hematology Oncology at WVU. Dr. Abraham organized early meetings to discuss the creation of the Society.

“It’s exciting to see the enthusiasm our colleagues across the state have demonstrated in building a clinical trials network,” said Scot C. Remick, MD, director of the MBRCC. “Together we can do so much more to improve cancer care in West Virginia.” WVOS recently was accepted as a full member by the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The national organization recognizes the importance of state chapters in reflecting issues that may have national impact on cancer care.

The first full membership meeting of the WVOS will be on May 8 at Stonewall Jackson Resort. The Society is open to all oncologists in West Virginia, along with other professionals engaged in cancer care. Healthcare professionals interested in joining the society should contact Julie Shroyer, executive director, at Julie@wvos.info or 304-368-4575.
