Animal Models and Imaging Facility
Cryopreservation

While attending the Workshop on Colony Management course at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, Mindy Hollander was trained to successfully cryopreserve sperm from mice.  It only requires two male mice per line (preferably between 10 and 16 weeks old) to back up your valuable mouse models.

The kits come in sizes to cryopreserve 3, 6 or 9 lines at $3,550, $6,625, and $9,550, respectively.  This comes to only $1,000 - $1,200 per line.  This price includes the kit (which contains ALL required reagents and supplies), quality control testing of the sperm samples by Jackson Laboratory, a dry shipper to ship the samples, and 3 years of liquid nitrogen storage at Jackson Labs in three tanks at two locations.

You can see more details on the Jackson Laboratory’s site http://jaxservices.jax.org/spermcryokit.html
